The Camos Sat-Dome has been around for what seems to be centuries.

We decided to take the lid of the Camos Dome and take it apart, we must say that we were impressed.

The Dome Satellite System from Camos is well constructed an uses high quality components from the PCB to the stainless steel bolts.

Overall the dome provided an all round package that was hard to beat.

When you take the lid of the Camos Dome you notice that the unit is very clean and well presented. (Even with the lid off the unit is tidy)

Camos Dome without Cover

The dome satellite dish is powered by some serious high speed motors which use heavy duty cam belts to move the dish.

Image of the Heavy Duty motors

The LNB is also a quality unit and can be skewed if you need to.

LNB of the Camos Dome satellite System

We removed the dish is self to take a closer look at the bearings that enable the Camos Dome to move with ease.

Camos Sat Dome main drive belt

Again the bearings used on the Camos Satellite Dome are tip top and would easily last a lifetime.

The whole satellite dish is self is moved using another motor which protrudes from the underside of the dish assembly.

This also has a support wheel with another heavy bearing through it.

Conclusion:

After taking the Camos Dome Satellite System apart, we found that the unit was constructed using high quality components. This ensures that the unit is free from any maintanance.

The unit is reliable and easy to install which makes it an ideal unit for the avid DIY person.

We would like to thank TSW COMSAT for providing the unit for testing.

You can also see details of how to install a Camos Dome at CamosDome.com

We are always looking for things to take apart, so if you have a unit you would like us to look at please let us know.

The Oyster Satellite Company was founded over 10 years ago by the brothers Ten Haaft who produced one of the first fully automatic satellite systems on the market.

Now branded OYSTER, the company produces a large range of systems for all types of vehicles.

We are going to take a look at several systems in detail over the next few weeks, starting with the Caro Oyster Satellite system.

Oyster Caro Satellite System

The Oyster Caro satellite system is flat which reduces the profile on your vehicle.

This system is also able to cover a good footprint area given the size of the dish.

What Vehicle is the Oyster Caro Suitable for?

The Caro can be used on almost every vehicle and makes a great motorhome satellite system, caravan satellite system and even a super little system for narrowboats.

The dish is operated from inside the vehicle using a single button and a easy to use on screen menu system.

The Oyster Satellite system offers an integrated EPG. (electronic programme guide) To make program selection easy.

Mobile Broadband – An Overview

Mobile broadband is the latest broadband technology that aims at liberating broadband connections from a fixed landline and giving the customer the freedom to access fast broadband internet from wherever they are in the country. It is still a growth industry in the UK, and nearly every mobile phone network and some fixed line broadband ISPs are offering mobile broadband services at varying costs and with varying speeds and connection limitations. Mobile broadband operates over the newest mobile networking technologies and is similar to the internet capabilities found in the latest mobile phone handsets. All you need is a USB Mobile Broadband dongle, which most ISPs will provide for free when you take out a fixed term contract with them, and a laptop computer. But what separates the various mobile broadband ISPs from one another, and why should you choose a particular deal?

Comparing Mobile Broadband ISPs
There are four areas of a mobile broadband deal that you`ll need to consider before making a choice of ISP, and those are connection speed, monthly data allowance, contract length and monthly cost. 3 Mobile are considered to be the best all rounder with their £15 a month deal, which offers a free USB dongle capable of 3.6Mbps download speed, a generous 5GB of usage per month, which will allow around 50 hours of web use, and an 18 month contract. You won`t find a much better deal for your money than that. If you want a speedier connection, Vodafone offer up to 7.2Mbps download speed on a 12 month contract for £15 per month, but you`ll only have 3GB of data allowance to play with, which may not be enough if you`re planning on using your connection for more than just light surfing and emailing. T-Mobile is one of the many mobile broadband ISPs who have put together a mobile broadband package than includes a free laptop built into the monthly price. For £25 a month over a 24 mon!
th period you get mobile broadband with speeds of up to 4.5Mbps and a 3GB monthly data allowance, along with a free Asus Eee PC laptop. These kinds of deals are great for people who want to get a broadband connection but don`t have any of the equipment and don`t want to shell out a lot of money all in one go.

People Who Will Benefit
The most obvious group who will be interested in mobile broadband are those who either don`t have a landline and don`t want to pay for installation and monthly line rental on top of broadband costs, or those who are renting or planning on moving and don`t want to have broadband commitments at a fixed address. Another group that you may not have considered are owners of caravans who want internet access whilst they are on holiday. Because mobile broadband can be used up and down the country wherever there is network coverage, caravan owners will have the freedom to access the internet whenever they please wherever they are.

The new NETA static satellite dome system should be a lot lighter that the current ''IN-MOTION'' versions but this information is still to be confirmed.

Following a recent conversation today with LCS Leisure , who import the NETA Dome Satellite System. We have been advised that NETA have now produced a 34cm Static version of the NETA satellite dome system. The unit is due to be released in the UK sometime in 2009.

The new NETA static satellite dome system should be a lot lighter that the current ”IN-MOTION” versions but this information is still to be confirmed.

The NETA static satellite system is currently being tested thoroughly throughout Europe to establish its performance specification.

We hope to be able to bring you more information as and when it is released by LCS Leisure.

You can contact LCS LEisure for more details.

The whole purpose of the Power inverter is to convert DC power stored in a battery into a usable 230 V electric to power standard household appliances. However is very hard to evaluate the quality of the inverter from the description given in many magazines, papers and on many websites.

Cheap inverters can be good value for money but tend to have a short life expectancy, so be prepared to purchase another one soon after the original. The only other major drawback with the cheap power inverters is the quality of electric been produced. Whilst this may be okay to power a light you would be extremely ill-advised to use the inverter to power any sensitive equipment. Cheap inverters tend to use the square wave signal which can be unreliable.

It is always advisable, when purchasing an inverter to look for a true or pure sine wave inverter as these provide the same quality of electric as you would expect to receive from the National Grid, in some cases even better quality electric. The main drawback to the true sine wave or pure sine wave inverter is the cost.

Most modern inverters generally provide protection against over-voltage and under voltage, this is designed to protect sensitive equipment from power surges. Inverters are available for use with 12 V or 24 V batteries and range in size from very small 80 W systems to systems that exceed 3000 W of power. Most lower wattage inverters may be connected directly to a cigarette lighter output, however the larger inverters will require a direct connection to the battery using a substantial cable.

As a general rule of thumb the cost of the inverter depends upon the wattage required and the type of inverter chosen. Inverters are produced three types, square sine wave, quasi-sine wave and true sine wave sometimes referred to as pure sine wave.

It is highly recommended that you have at least two 110 amp batteries installed into your vehicle if you intend to use a Power inverter. A Power inverter will reduce the operational life of your battery quite substantially. If you intend to install one of the larger inverters it is recommended a minimum of three 110 amp hour arteries are used.

To conclude.

Whilst power inverters are extremely useful for powering equipment that you would not normally find in a motor home caravan boat etc, you must expect a very large drain on your batteries. It is also advisable to purchase a Power inverter of the pure sine wave type if you intend to run any sensitive equipment such as laptops, televisions, microwaves or gaming equipment.

History

Sky digital as it is known today was formed in 1990 as a result of a merger between Rupert Murdoch owner of Sky television and the British Satellite Broadcasting Company. This was in effect a takeover of the British Satellite Broadcasting Company by Sky television. This led to the scrapping of the most of the British Satellite Broadcasting channels and the sale of British Satellite Broadcasting head office, Marco Polo house. In addition the Marco Polo series satellites were run down and sold off between 1992 and 1993 in favour of the Astra System.

However the merger between the two companies provided urgently needed advertising revenue for sky. This was due to the a that sky had very few major advertisers despite its popularity.

The Astra Network

In 1989 the first satellite of the Astra satellite network launched Astra 1A offering an analogue service to the UK and Ireland. This was closely followed in 1991 with the launch of more Astra satellites which were orbitally co-located so that they could be received by using the same satellite dish.

In 1997 Astra launched the series two satellite in new orbital position of 28.2° E closely followed by more Astra satellites as well Eutelsat and Eurobird1 at 28.5° E giving them the capacity to host sky digital. Built by Boeing the new fleet of Astra two satellites maintains a geostationary orbit at 35,600 kilometres from the earth.

During the following years Sky increased its channel package from the original Sky One, Sky News and Sky Movies to include Sky Sports, Sky Sports 2 and the History Channel, the Disney Channel and finally introduced Sky + in 2001.

In 2005 Sky and launched Sky broadband which was available to existing Sky Movies and Sky Sports subscribers this then allowed them to download movies and sports clips director home computer free of charge.

Looking Into The Future

There have been rumours started by the Economist which suggests that BSkyB would like to merge with the Direct TV and possibly start a new satellite service call Star TV which would form a global satellite TV Company. However BSkyB has recently sold its share in Direct TV quashing any rumour of a merger with Direct TV. Sky is also rumoured to be interested in National Football League to the Sky line up.

Sky Television have put forward plans to release a digital terrestrial television service called Sky Picnic. However following investigations by Ofcom on the 13th of May, 2008 Sky televisions plans have been put on hold until at least 2009. A spokesman from Sky advised that the project has currently being put on hold.

The cold weather seems to be upon us once again, and I have been down to the van and let the water out, replenished the damp stuff and changed the fuel cell on the EFOY. I hope that this will keep the battery up over the winter as it’s the first winter Ive had it.

Well will have to take a look in a few weeks and see how things are getting on.

Challenger, Abbey GTS, Sterling Eccles and Ace Award ranges produced by manufacturer Swift.

The high output, soft white LED energy-saving lighting system uses half of the energy as traditional caravan lighting and not only does this prolong the battery life but it allows owners to power the system using a solar panel.
